Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injection containing the neurotoxin botulinum toxin, which temporarily keeps targeted muscles from flexing. Strategically placed Botox injections can treat facial wrinkles that appear due to muscle movements over time.

Dysport®, a similar injectable to Botox, is also available at Heber Valley Dermatology. Both injections have the same primary ingredient and can accomplish the same cosmetic goals.

Both Botox and Dysport work by preventing the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that your nerves release that tells your muscle cells to contract.

In addition to smoothing wrinkles, Botox works remarkably well as a treatment for hyperhidrosis - a condition causing excessive sweating.

What wrinkles does Botox treat?

Botox and Dysport treat a specific type of wrinkle called a dynamic wrinkle, which forms over time the more you use your facial muscles to make expressions. Dr. Collins uses Botox to minimize:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet

While Botox works for all three of these wrinkle types, Dysport is only FDA approved for moderate to severe frown lines. Just one to three days after your treatment at Heber Valley Dermatology, you can observe the full effect of your Botox or Dysport injections.

How long do my Botox or Dysport results last?

Botox and Dysport cannot offer permanent results, though you can make getting injections a regular occurrence at Heber Valley Dermatology. By getting Botox or Dysport injections regularly, you can enjoy the effects for a very long time.

The duration of the effects after each round of injections varies among individuals, but you can expect at least 3-4 months of wrinkle-free skin before it’s time to schedule your next Botox or Dysport injection appointment.

When treating hyperhidrosis, the effects of Botox can last for 4-14 months.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

Cosmetic injectables like Botox and Dysport appeal to a lot of people who already show signs of aging and those who have concerns for future wrinkles. Your consultation at Heber Valley Dermatology determines whether or not either of these treatments is the right choice for you. Dr. Collins asks about your personal medical history and your cosmetic goals.

You might be a good candidate for Dysport or Botox injections if you:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Don’t have any active skin infections
  • Are not pregnant
  • Are over 18
  • Have goals you can realistically reach

If Botox is not the best choice for you, or if your goals align with another treatment instead of Botox, Dr. Collins happily makes appropriate treatment recommendations.

Smoother skin around the eyes and forehead is a goal that you can reach with just a few Botox or Dysport injections. Book your consultation over the phone or online at Heber Valley Dermatology today.
