Dermal Filler Q&A

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a cosmetic injectable that aims to add volume to your face. Believe it or not, many of your features that change with age do so because of the loss of subdermal fat and collagen. Dermal fillers can make up for this loss by adding artificial volume.

There are a variety of dermal fillers out there, and Dr. Collins makes sure you know plenty of details about the fillers available to you. Many fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a thick substance that helps your cells hold moisture. It already exists in your body and is safe to inject as a dermal filler.

Other fillers have different primary ingredients that help your skin produce more collagen. These fillers tend to produce longer-lasting results than hyaluronic acid fillers because the collagen remains even after the filler dissolves.

How can I enhance my appearance with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are highly adaptable and can offer many possible results. Your initial appointment at Heber Valley Dermatology is a consultation at which you can discuss your goals with Dr. Collins. She finds out how you want to enhance your appearance, whether or not fillers are the best method, and which fillers work best for your desired results.

Fillers can add volume or modify facial contours. Using them, you can:

  • Smooth deep wrinkles, like marionette lines
  • Diminish recessed scars
  • Smooth lip lines
  • Make your lips plumper
  • Add symmetry to your lips and face
  • Reduce a chin crease
  • Restore volume to sunken cheeks
  • Decrease the shadow beneath your lower lids

If you have other goals in mind, you can combine dermal fillers with other cosmetic treatments for a well-rounded overall result. For example, Botox® and Dysport® are both available at Heber Valley Dermatology and are better suited to treat smaller wrinkles and fine facial lines.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The duration of your results with dermal fillers depends on the specific filler product Dr. Collins uses in your treatment. Some fillers last only as long as your skin holds the product, while others stimulate collagen growth that can last for much longer.

Hyaluronic acid fillers, one of the most common varieties, tend to last for 6-12 months, depending on where you place them. They dissolve gradually, and you can get touch-ups with them once the results start to fade.

Fillers made with calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), and others produce results that last for 1-2 years or longer. You can also get them repeatedly if you choose.

Dermal fillers can make the facial contour alterations you want to see. To learn more about specific fillers and determine if you’re a good candidate for the treatment, call either Heber Valley Dermatology office or book a consultation online today.
